Satsuma man’s vehicle struck by train

Posted on Apr 1st, 2011

A man injured March 22 when his pickup truck was struck by a train in Satsuma died Tuesday afternoon, according to Satsuma police.

A woman passenger remained hospitalized Tuesday, police said.

A statement from the office of Satsuma police chief David Benefield said that Cameron Thompson died at University of South Alabama Medical Center about 4 p.m. Tuesday. His passenger, Sonnie Hicks, remained hospitalized at USAMC in serious condition, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The collision took place in the early evening on Bayou Avenue at the Norfolk Southern Railway crossing just east of U.S. 43. Police said Thompson’s westbound truck crossed in front of the southbound freight train despite flashing warning lights at the crossing.

The two-locomotive, 61-car train struck the truck just behind the cab and continued half a mile south on the track before stopping, police said. No one on the train was injured, and the train did not derail.
